Augusta hosts USSSA Military World TournamentAUGUSTA, Ga. - The city of Augusta will host the U.S. Specialty Sports Association Military World Softball Tournament Aug. 10 - 13."This year's tournament is the biggest one yet with 138 teams participating," said Glenn Parker, director of Augusta's Recreation and Parks Department. "We hosted 123 teams last year, so this year's event promises more players and more excitement."The USSSA Military World Softball Tournament plays at two venues, as the city's Diamond Lakes Regional Park provides seven fields, and Fort Gordon hosts another four fields of play."Teams will come to Augusta from all across the U.S., including Hawaii, and from as far away as Europe," Parker said. "We expect this tournament to bring more than 3,000 people including players, their families and supporters to Augusta. Being a four-day event, these visitors will provides a significant boost to the area economy."Parker says this year’s event will have an estimated $3.5 million financial impact to the Augusta area, benefiting hotels, restaurants and local attractions.
In previous years, teams played in Panama City, Florida, and Columbus, Georgia. When the tournament was unable to return to Columbus, organizers looked at Augusta as a possible site for relocation, due to the presence of Fort Gordon. Organizers first brought the event to the city in 2016 following discussions with leaders of the Augusta Sports Council, Fort Gordon, and the city’s Recreation and Parks Department. Representatives of the USSSA visited Augusta to view the available facilities and determine if area hotels could accommodate the large number of visitors. Subsequently, they met with Augusta leaders to discuss making the tournament a reality. Without the efforts of the staffs of the Augusta Recreation Department and MWR of Fort Gordon, the city would be unable to host this tournament successfully. This year’s tournament marks the second consecutive year the USSSA has come to Augusta. The tournament will feature teams competing in several divisions of slow-pitch softball. Divisions include Men’s Military Varsity, Men’s Military Intermural, Mixed Military and Women’s Military.
